ɫ��APP����’s Roots & Shoots Club took an exciting trip to Beijing to celebrate the 30th anniversary of Roots & Shoots in China. The event was made even more memorable by the presence of Dr. Jane Goodall, the program's founder and world-renowned primatologist. Dr. Goodall has dedicated over 60 years advocating for the environment and inspiring action, becoming a beloved symbol of hope worldwide.

 

 

During the celebration, SAS was recognized as an Outstanding Roots & Shoots group for the club’s exceptional contributions to environmental conservation. As one of the few international schools in China selected to host a booth at the event, SAS students showcased their long-standing efforts to protect the environment. The SAS Roots & Shoots club organized a trash sorting game and a nature collage showcasing their work combating desertification in Inner Mongolia, where SAS students have helped plant over 21,238 trees through the Million Tree Project.

A standout moment came when Bella, a senior, dressed up as a tree to raise awareness about biodiversity loss – caught the attention of Dr. Goodall herself. Bella described the experience as “surreal”.

Dr. Goodall’s inspiring message of hope resonated deeply with attendees. As Ryan, a freshman, noted, “Everyone doesn’t need to make a decisive impact to become an ethical global citizen. With everyone collaborating and making small steps, we could have a balanced environment and even bring back much of our natural habitat.”

Now back at SAS, students are eager to share what they learned and keep building on the school’s legacy of sustainable action. "The SAS delegation's participation in this milestone event was not only a dream come true but also a testament to the power of education in nurturing future leaders,” reflected Dr. Aiza Kashif, the club mentor and high school science teacher. “As they return inspired, they carry forward the vision of creating a more compassionate and sustainable world, embodying the very spirit of Roots & Shoots.”
